HEEL & HOLD: Focused Hold
Class Size: 10 Cost: $175.00
This introductory class is geared towards helping your dog understand how to use their bodies with precision. Conversely, the human part of the team will be taught what to expect from the dog and how to shape that behavior. Humans will learn the mechanics of food delivery, toy rewards, multiple leash coordination, the power of Marker Words, and more! We’ve all seen videos of dogs prancing happily at their owners’ sides, matching each directional change with snappy precision. If this is something you have always wanted to do, this is the class for you! This is also a good class for you if you just need some improvement in walking your dog in public or are competing at Rally and AKC obedience. Additionally, if you are needing help for your IPG BH or Ring titles this class will be very helpful. There are dozens of phases when shaping a beautifully confident Focused Heel. Your instructor, Did McElroy, will help each team no matter what skill level you bring to the table. If you already have a good foundation let’s step up your game! If you know nothing, Didi will give you the homework to build that solid foundation.
Besides heeling we will simultaneously be working on the long “down-stay”. This is one of the most useful and life saving behaviors a dog can have. Stays are completely useless if the dog constantly gets up when you aren’t looking or something exciting happens nearby. In this class we will build off leash down stays despite toys being squeezed & thrown, unusual noises, other dogs running or chasing a toy, and other distractions.
Supplies:
- Teams will need 3 lenghts of leashes (12″, 4-6 foot and 12+ foot). I can make these available for sale in class with prior notice or give you the resources to purchase.
- Handlers should wear a jacket with large pockets, training apron and/or a treat pouch that is secured around waist.
- Everydog has a different temperament, personality and working drives. Please bring a bag of tools you have used in the past or own and have never used. We will discuss their function, pros and cons, and if your individual dog would benefit from their use. Alll tools require training in how to implement them humanely and effectively.
- Water and bowl
- Dogs will need to be crated or rested in your car periodically during class.
- Bring high value treats that don’t crumble and/or a high value toy. We will discuss treats and toys in class if you are unsure.
- Wear shoes that are waterproof or water resistant during winter.
